Why does the Indonesian language use the Latin alphabet?

I can understand why European languages use it, but why Indonesian and Vietnamese? Don't they have their own script? What historic event caused them to adopt it?
If the answer is the Dutch and French colonisers, I say, Bengali and Hindu kept their own script when the British came, what is different about Indonesia and Vietnam?
I meant Hindi not Hindu

I'm heading to Indonesia early next year wanting to learn the Indonesian Language. I am australian and am willing to teach english, build or any other services that I may be able to provide.
